Floating

Floating Rest (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique) is a relaxation technique. You are floating in a very big tank or floatingroom with water at body temperature and 30% Epsom salts, magnesium Sulphate. A sensation of weightlessness is felt as skin, water and air all have the same temperature 34,8° C degrees (about 95 ° F). The point of floating is to relax, unwind and get pain relief but other positive side effects can be obtained such as easing or curing all forms of muscular pain such as whiplash, rheumatism, fibromyalgi etc. Other areas of use are spasms in the disabled, super learning and mental training for sportsmen and women. These are just some of the reasons for floating but expecially attractive to patiens as no tablets, injections or operations are involved. It is worth first giving the brain the chance of repairing damages caused for different reasons. Remember the brain uses 85% of its capacity just keeping the body so balanced that you can stand. It is easy to understand that when this resource when freed to troubleshoot in the body then miracles occur.

Two tanks should be invested in at the same time or at least planned for and space allowed. The reason for this is that it is common for two to come together for floating and it can be tough to wait for one and a half hours until the other one is ready.

The salt count is even higher than in the Dead Sea. You float like a cork so just relax and dream away to a wonderful holiday with sunshine and warmth, palm trees and lots of lovely water. If this is not enough you can be served soothing music simultaneously which could contain dolphin noises, the sound of the sea or other enjoyable sounds. You may naturally choose your own favourite music to relax to.

When you have floated you have also experienced the shortest hour of your life because of the fact that most clients fall asleep within ten minutes and awake as the hour draws to its close.

Drown? Oh, no! The brain is made so that you cannot turn your head downwards but you lie as safely on your back in the floating tank as you do in your bed.

You dicide when you want to close the lid and switch of the lighting so the risk of claustrophobia is non-existent. You get the best experience of the lid is closed.

The Aqua-Anima floatingtank

The tank is 2.76 m long, 1.5 m wide and 1.3 m high in other words as big as a car. The tank is a sandwich construction consisting of four parts, top, bottom and two covers. Inside each part is insulating material which effectively prevents heat leaving the tank which in turn decreases the use of energy. The insulation also prevents external noise from penetrating which could be disturbing for the floater. Inside the tank is painted a beautiful blue but for the outside you can choose your own colour. The tank contains 700 litres of luke warm water containing 30 % Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate). In addition there is:

An alarm button to the reception
Two buttons for underwater lighting and the fan
Mouthpiece for clean water from the filter to the tank
Heating element which keeps the temperature constant (+- 0.1 ° C)
Two loudspeakers for the buyer´s exernal hifi equipment

Extra equipment

Video screen for mental training and learning.
A button for regulation sound.

The filter

The filter is concealed within the tank behind a wall. It consists of a seal-lessmagnetic drive centrifugal pump, and a 20" filter house and a UV lamp for killing bacteria. 1.600 litres of water passes through the filter between clients i.e. twice the content of the tank. The advantage of placing the filter in the tank is that leakage onto the floor is eliminated and also the unit takes less room.

The fan

is giving the person fresh air from the room This prevents the risk of water droplets forming on the roof inside the tank. If this happens the floater may risk getting drops on herself whilst floating which is very irritating and disturbing. The fan eliminates this risk provided that the air conditioning in the room is good.

Electronics

A box for the electronics should be placed on the tank side or a close wall. All the various cables for the floating tanks electrical components are housed in this such as the pump 230 V, the heating element 230 V, the fan 24 V, the underwater lamp 12 V, the light buttons 12 V, the UV lamp 230 V as well as the wires to the loudspeakers. The customer has to ensure that the necessary cables are drawn to the electronics box. The seller will supply instructions. Electric supply: 1.900 W, 230 V, 16 Ampher

Research

ELICITING THE RELAXATION RESPONSE WITH THE HELP OF FLOTATION-REST (RESTRICTED ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULATION TECHNIQUE) IN PATIENTS WITH STRESS-RELATED AILMENTS.

Sven Å. Bood, Ulf Sundequist, Anette Kjellgren and Torsten Norlander, Karlstad University

International Journal of Stress Management
2006, Vol. 13, No. 2, 154-175

This study aimed to investigate long-term effects of the flotation-REST 4 months after treatment. Seventy patients, 54 women and 16 men, participated, diagnosed as having stress-related pain. Twenty-six participants had also the diagnosis of burnout depression. Participants were randomly assigned in equal numbers to either a control group or a flotation-REST group and participated in a total of 12 flotation-REST or controll sessions. Results indicated that pain areas, stress, anxiety, and depression decreased, whereas sleep quality, optimism, and prolactin increased. Positive effects generally maintained 4 months after treatment, but prolactin returned to initial levels. It was concluded that flotation tank therapy is an effective method for the treatment of stress-related pain.

EFFECTS OF FLOTATION-RESTRICTED ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULATION TECHNIQUE ON STRESS-RELATED MUSCLE PAIN: WHAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE IN THERAPY - ATTENTION-PLACEBO OR THE RELAXATION RESPONSE?

Introduction: The purpose of the present study was to examine the potential effects of attention-placebo on flotation tank therapy. Flotation-restricted environmental stimulation technique is a method whereby an individual lies in a floating tank and all stimuli are reduced to a minimum.

Methods: 32 patients were diagnosed as having stressrelated muscular pain. 16 of the participants had received the diagnosis of burnout depression. The patients were treated with flotation-restricted environmental stimulation technique for six weeks. One-half of the patients were also given special attention for 12 weeks.
Results: The participants exhibited lowered blood pressure, reduced pain, anxiety, depresion, stress and negative affectivity, as well as increased optimism, energy and positive affectivity. The results were largely unaffected by the degree of attention-placebo or diagnosis.
Conclusion: It was concluded that flotation therapy is an effective, noninvasive method for treating stress-related pain, and the method is not more affected by placebo than by other methods currently used in pain treatment. The treatment of both burnout depression and pain related to muscle tension constitutes a major challenge for the patient as well as the care provider, an area in which great gains can be made if the treatment is effective. Flotation therapy may constitute an integral part of such treatment.
